About DetectAIves
DetectAIves is a University of Maryland initiative focused on helping communities better understand artificial intelligence through education, research, and hands-on learning. The program brings students, researchers, community organizers, and older adults together to explore how AI is changing everyday life.
What Is DetectAIves?
DetectAIves is an intergenerational AI literacy program that combines workshops, student projects, and community engagement. Participants learn about topics such as misinformation, privacy, trust, chatbots, and how AI systems make decisions.
The program gives undergraduate students the chance to work on real projects while learning from faculty, graduate mentors, and community members. It also creates welcoming spaces where older adults can ask questions, share concerns, and build confidence with new technology.
Through research and collaboration, DetectAIves aims to make conversations about AI more practical, inclusive, and useful for everyone.
How It Started
DetectAIves began as a way to connect university students and researchers with older adult communities interested in understanding emerging technology. What started as workshops and conversations grew into a larger program centered on AI literacy and public engagement.
As the program developed, students began creating tools, websites, reports, and learning resources inspired by what participants wanted to know most. Today, DetectAIves continues to grow as a model for combining education, research, and community impact.
